Punjabi suits the first love of every Indian women
There can hardly be a woman in India, who does not
love donning the salwar kameez, whether at home, for a casual outing, or at a
major social event! The roomy and comfortable three-set creation is suitable
for all body types. While the upper item of clothing is the ‘kameez’, the lower
item in the whole ensemble is the ‘salwar’. A ‘dupatta’ suffices to cover the
bodice of the kameez.
Traditional Wear
Since it originated from the northern state of
Punjab in India, the salwar kameez is often termed as a Punjabi suit
too. This traditional dress remained within the confines of the domestic arena
for a long time. The women could go about their daily chores without any
hassles. Furthermore, the set adhered to the requisites related to ‘decency’
and ‘cover it all’.
The kameez was generally long, going up to the
knees, or even below it. Full-sleeved in appearance, it had a wide
circumference in tow. The neckline at the back remained demure, plunged
moderately, or appeared deep set in accordance with individual choices. With
regard to the salwar, it tended to be wide at the waistline. The cloth belt
attached to it permitted the formation of pleats. As it moved towards the
ankles, the salwar became narrower in style.
Modern Look
Punjabi suits have
undergone drastic transformations over the years. You are welcome to show them
off anywhere and everywhere. After all, couturiers take care to customise the
diverse patterns to suit the occasion. Apart from the fact that they have
become vibrantly colourful over the years, these items of clothing often
display embroidery, appliqué work, sequins and mirrors, motifs, etc, as
embellishments. As a result, it becomes possible to match them with different
kinds of accessories, such as jewellery, footwear, handbags/purses, etc.
When choosing jewellery to go with your outfit, you
will have to decide if you desire to make a bold or subtle kind of fashion
statement. To illustrate, diamonds go well with every kind of feminine attire,
regardless of whether it is traditional, vintage, contemporary, or ultra-modern
in nature. With regard to pure gold, pure silver, oxidised silver, sterling
silver, steel, platinum, etc, however, you will have to make a careful study of
mix-and-match, in order to produce the best overall effect possible. It is the
same with footwear and other accessories. You will have to try out diverse
combinations, prior to narrowing down on final choices.
Elegant Patiala Suits
Although couturiers continue to experiment with
styles and cuts, the majority of women continue to treat the Patiala suit as an
all-time favourite amongst Punjabi
suits. This is because it is a perfect blend of both, traditional and
trendy.
Take the salwar, for instance. At first glance, it
seems rather ordinary. A closer look suggests that the silhouette is slightly
different. Despite having many drapes, it does not give the impression of
overcrowding or stuffiness. Instead, every drape falls fluidly, right up to the
ankle, giving the impression of perfect symmetry and grace. You may team it
with a short and well-fitting kurta/kameez, which has embellishments, such as
thread embroidery, heavy sequins, etc. Modern designers pay glorious attention
to the necklines and hemlines too. The dupatta may possess polka dots, be
phulkari in pattern, display subtle embellishments, etc. Whatever is the case, when
you find appropriate clothing accessories to match your dress, you should prove
to be the centre of attraction at any social affair!
Summary
Despite diverse styles of Punjabi suits carving
their own niche in the global world of fashion, the Patiala still reigns as favourite.
It is traditional, yet chic, suitable for every occasion.
